As a FGLI student, I'm extremely disappointed in your mocking Jane Doe as a "Karen" considering the meaning of that name. Try having some sympathy for someone who thought they might not get funding they desperately needed during a global pandemic before you start calling people "Karen".

Re: The Impeachment that Exposed the WSA: An Investigation

How ironic, you silence one person’s voice over an anonymous comment. I can see that it says that the WSA has some drama that's "serious" and some that is "petty as fuck". In terms of facts, I understood that many people think Huzaifa was bad and that the WSA President didn't think there was a cover up but you think there was. Is there any real info here? I feel like we know all of this.

Also, the article spends a lot of time focusing on the fact that Wesleying took a long time to write this article (was it 96 hours?), that Wesleying has journalistic ethics and is better than anonymous pieces. This is all great and true, but it's not what I came here to read - I wanted to hear what really happened, not that everyone is saying different things and that the WSA is "petty as fuck" (but still does "good work"?)

Re: The Impeachment that Exposed the WSA: An Investigation

There's a lot of interesting info here, from both sides. Props on Wesleying being cautious on that Medium post. I sympathize with Jane Doe/Applicant. I really do, but that piece---even the person said it themselves in Argus' article--they had nothing to do with it. This lends me to believe those that wrote this did so with an intent to seriously do some damage, hell to incite some stupid drama. This did NOT start a conversation. This incited mass hysteria in the Wesleyan community with students being completely polarized on this topic. Is it feasible for the University to always respond to emergencies by taking into student opinion? Turns out the WSA already had a committee for that so there you go. There has been travel bans to China and now Europe, NBA and NCAA seasons are suspended, WHO recognized it as a pandemic, CT declared in state of emergency, peer schools are suspended, mass social events whether concerts or campaign/government related are being cancelled. Yet, this article still trivialized the global pandemic that is Coronovirus.
Please take down this article or at least try to understand the mass hysteria that was instigated by this. I have seen Facebook posts where people have come under attack for speaking against this post. Please try to understand the consequences of what you put out on the internet.

Please do not exploit the worries and plights of international, low income or home insecure students because you want to stay on this campus for your own agenda such as partying, enjoying your last semester, or just resuming classes. How many of you had actually spoken to such minority groups before writing this article? If Wesleyan students had truly cared about their fellow peers and faculty (wait they don’t because faculty, elderly people, employees, middletown residents were not even considered!) so much, they would have taken Dean Whaley’s advise and NOT travelled domestically or internationally to high risk areas.

Re: In Response to Potential University Shutdown over COVID-19

"Clearly, a decision to prevent students from returning to campus would be an attempt to save its own resources and protect its own image, and not out of the concern for the wellbeing of its student, faculty, and staff population."

This is an irresponsible conclusion to jump to. And it's disappointing to see you lump 'faculty and staff' into your statement here, when you neglected to entertain their actual perspective or concerns at all in the body of your analysis.

Most Wesleyan students are in a low-risk demographic, but the faculty and staff aren't necessarily—many professors, dining hall workers, and custodians, as well as Middletown community members who may interact with the university, would be at significantly higher risk with the disease. COVID-19 is highly communicable and would spread easily through a concentrated college campus—as anyone who's been a student during flu season knows. Not to mention many of you would be coming back from Spring Break having traveled beyond campus, out-of-state, or even out of the country.

I've seen the addendum to this blog post and it's great. It makes a lot of sense in thinking about the broader population as well as the potential medical vulnerabilities of particular students, while still considering the issue of students who rely on Wesleyan housing and support. I just wish that that could have been the post you guys put out first. If this initial post was simply to 'open space for conversation' as your edit states, then I wish it wasn't framed in such definitive and antagonistic terms like in the quoted statement above. You also immediately put out a petition framing the issue in the lopsided terms that this initial post frames things, and it's still being signed.

Re: In Response to Potential University Shutdown over COVID-19

As a Biology professor here at Wesleyan, I am committed to instilling an ethic about infectious disease that will keep us all safe. I am therefore writing to object to the letter in Wesleying on the “Potential University Shutdown over COVID-19.” The sentiment of the letter misses the point that we must all make sacrifices in our regular routines to fight this major public health threat.

I’d like to reiterate what most of us have heard but have not yet quite digested. This is a highly contagious pathogen, with an “R0” between 2 and 3—that is, there are 2-3 new infections per each currently infected person. At this rate, there will be millions of Americans infected within a few months, possibly 40-70% of the American population. Given that about 5% of those infected develop critical disease, requiring hospitalization, our country will fall grossly short of the hospital beds, ventilators, and so on to keep people alive. Since we do not yet have a vaccine or therapeutic technology to stave off transmission, the only way out is to diminish the transmission rate through our own behavior.

All around the country, governments and organizations are sensibly canceling events that will bring hundreds of people together in the same place. Decisions like this, plus improved hygiene and other means of social distancing, can help reduce the transmission to a manageable level. I can appreciate that healthy young people might be willing to take a chance on infection, but this pandemic requires a sacrifice from every one of us. When any of us are infected, whether mildly or deathly, we run the risk of transmitting the infection.

So, a quick review of our responsibilities. First, we need to keep our germs to ourselves. In the case of coronavirus, this means self-quarantining when we are infected. Second, we need to keep ourselves healthy—by staying away from crowds and practicing good hygiene. We cannot spread the infection if we are not infected. Third, we need to indulge in what has become known as the “socialism of the microbe.” That is, we need to make sacrifices for those who are infected (or who might get infected), lest others’ infections become our own infections and the infections of our parents and grandparents. We can all understand the importance of sacrifices to invest in the care of those with TB or HIV infections. It’s not just altruism, but this investment also ultimately protects ourselves and our loved ones from infection. Likewise, by making personal sacrifices so that we become less likely to become infected, we are saving the lives of those more vulnerable who we might infect.

I urge students to support Wesleyan’s potential shutdown and move toward virtual education.

Sincerely,
Fred Cohan
Huffington Foundation Chair of Biology in the College of the Environment

Re: In Response to Potential University Shutdown over COVID-19

I think this is really disingenuous considering many of these people traveled off campus despite two emails warning not to do so. The authors of this letter are just like every rich Wes kid who traveled off campus, ignoring the growing crisis; now whining about facing the consequences. One of the authors posted on their IG saying "Wesleyan cancelling classes would really just be the final step in the administration's war on parties". This is about more than your comfort and senior year parties; not sure why we should throw y'all a "The Masque of the Read Death"-themed senior year at the expense of Wesleyan professor and Middletown community members' lives.

Re: In Response to Potential University Shutdown over COVID-19

Here is a useful FAQ that reviews these issues in a moderately amusing way:

https://www.emptywheel.net/...

Re: In Response to Potential University Shutdown over COVID-19

Very well stated. This is a very difficult situation. I appreciate the willingness to put out a reasonable dialog that points to the fact that panic spreads as fast as the virus. I hope the University follows the recommendations of the CDC rather than assume other schools know better. This is a fluid situation so the decisions (and our opinions) may change at any time.

Re: In Response to Potential University Shutdown over COVID-19

The student comments here are shockingly uninformed. Please educate yourselves about what has happened in China and in Italy -- it is coming to the US. You are displaying a callous lack of compassion for people in high-risk groups who will die of this virus, as well as health-care workers who will be risking their own lives in overwhelmed hospitals if we do not act to slow the spread. Fellow students, university staff, and faculty belong to several of the groups that are at high risk of severe forms of Covid-19 and of death. If we do not slow the spread of the disease, our hospitals will not be able to cope with it.
